Ryan got me hooked on his books with this succinct and endearing story.
I was afraid the book was going to be just a retelling of Cinderella, but the twist was just grand. Koa is such a lovable and immersive character to me. His wish to just taste what he could lost in the storm struck a cord with me. I had to giggle to myself, because I was not sure if Ryan knew that the homosexuality rate of bats is actually really high. However, I love bats all around, they are some of my favorite animals and to have a story of something not a fox, canid, or feline was refreshing from the hoards of fox related EVERYTHING. His description of the bat’s world high above was skillfully crafted and awe inspiring. I loved his use of magic and the rules set in his world. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know that likes to read.
I was not a fan of the art, but I have never had a taste for the American cartoon style of animation. It’s not a jab at the artist by any means, but it was just not my cup of tea. The way Ryan described Koa’s ability to grasp with his feet did not come through with Koa’s drawn human plantigrade feet.
So far in my latest reading ventures, Ryan and Kyell have become my favorite furry authors. It has been a wonderful adventure with these tales.
