Description

Kadar was born into one of the lowest castes in his society—the laborers. That is, until a series of unfortunate events trapped him in the only life worse, that of an indentured servant.

Literally collared by the powerful hyena clan that holds his contract, Kadar now finds himself facing a dangerous decision.

Live as a slave, or fight for freedom.

Joined by a hyena held captive by his own kind, a guard with a grudge against the very people he works for, and an indomitable cheetah, Kadar faces an uncertain future in a land where centuries of dependence on slavery and warfare make real freedom of any kind, for any caste, a dream that might be worth dying for.

An exciting story full of intense combat, deep introspection, unexpected love and romance, and hope. I had a difficult time putting this book down. If you’re a fan of any other stories set in the Red Lantern universe, you’ll definitely enjoy the thrill of Dawn.

An amazing fantasy novel full of action, romance and engaging worldbuilding. Kadar is a complex and intriguing protagonist who goes through excellent character development as the story goes along. The world that’s set up is harsh and violent, the caste system only reinforcing it. It makes for an utterly original setting unlike anything else I’ve read in fiction thus far. The illustrations are downright beautiful, too!

Kadar’s tale had me hooked from the first few pages as does the world he struggles to survive in. Rukis’ Red Lantern series is so well grounded and its many characters so well fleshed out that no reader is at a loss coming in at any point in the extended saga. For certain this tale of a furious jackal cheated of freedom, lost to family and seeking redemption through a re-examination of what love is provides excellent place to begin.
