This is a different book than Eternal Party. I read it differently, and it took me a little longer. I think it may be because Mila was a character who was a bit more open with herself about what she was escaping from, but didn’t want to remember. I think the big difference is that Aisha is more sure of herself, but she has walls up to protect herself from herself. So you’re seeing less of herself until she is forced to open up to herself and confront things.
This dynamic changes the way the story is approached. With more focus on how the magic system works, and world building as a more mainline focus than the personal journey and mystery of Mila, we are left to see what happens as a Mage (or Witch :P) has to figure out how to use her powers.
And the answer is about building connections, it is about seeking solace and refuge in others, not just in found family, but in trying to build bridges, mend fences, and let go of old grudges. It’s cathartic, and at times, aspirational. It’s what I would hope to do in some of those situations.
But then we come to the differences in sex. And this is interesting. I write a lot of sex in my pornographic ouvre, and yet I don’t think I’ve ever been as successful as Dark End is when going from the very submissive POV of Mila, to the very dominant POV of Aisha and how she treats her partners. No surprise, Dark End continues showing his excellence in being a BDSM author in that he also shows when a Dom goes too far and must amends. The dynamics of BDSM are different across all of the side characters which is no easy feat from my own experience with writing dynamics across characters in groups.
So, I recommend Pleasuremage, not because it’s more of Eternal Party, but because it isn’t. It’s more and an expansion of some of the same themes. I still almost would like to see more in that setting (Eternal Party Anthology when?) but I was thrilled to be back in the hands of Dark End’s prose.
